Genetic technologies to improve wool and fabric quality

(Program 1)

Program manager: Dr Ian Purvis, CSIRO Divison of Animal Production, Armidale, NSW

The project was fully supported by CSIRO and The Woolmark Company.

Overview

This program of research focussed on:

  1. increasing the profitability and competitiveness of the Merino breeder and woolgrower through the provision of better information for developing breeding goals and faster genetic gains in the wool quality traits they identify as important;
  2. increasing returns to the processor through improved wool quality and better prediction of processing performance; and
  3. providing better and new products to the consumer, through basic research that identifies genetic variation in new wool quality attributes.
