Sound
advice for sounder wool
After four years of studying how genetics, management and
nutrition affect wool strength, Wool CRC researchers have come up with
some rules of thumb to help woolgrowers produce sounder wool in
Mediterranean type climates.
"We believe that the overall plan for growers should be
to manage their animals to keep staple strength and the point of break at
their most profitable values, particularly in flocks that are increasing
their productivity in other ways such as fleece weight and diameter", said
Dr Norm Adams, CRC Program Manager at CSIRO Animal Production, WA.
General rules of thumb are included in the latest issue
of the Wool CRC's newsletter, 'The Wool Press'. Other features for wool
devotees in this issue include genetic selection of sheep in the next
century; intrinsic fibre strength; genetic engineering - the 'gold
particle bombardment' way; and how things are shaping up for a second Wool
CRC.
